THE Moonshot

To democratize interior design and navigation.

Great interior design can turn a house into a home. Unfortunately, the design process isn't very accessible and mistakes can be costly. Lowe's Innovation Labs came to us with the challenge of making the interior design process more experiential, playful, and efficient using augmented reality.

From making sure things fit, exploring new layouts, to making a purchase that fits within your budget, what if the experience felt more like playing a game?

OUR approach

We began the design process by conducting interviews to map the entire existing customer journey across all digital and physical touch points. This approach helps us identify areas of friction and opportunity to improve the experience that span beyond desktop or mobile screens.

We found that the interior design process was full of friction and can often overwhelm users with decision fatigue. Even purchasing items like a fridge can require multiple trips to the store to see if the fridge would fit and feel right in their space. These are big purchases, so getting the confidence that you'll be happy with it for the next 10 to 20 years is important.

After auditing the current customer journey, we came up with the following success criteria:

Playful - What if interior design felt more like a game? You should be able to try something out and immediately see what it looks like. This feedback loop allows you to try many different options quickly to hone in on a design that you like.

Fast - If it takes too long to try new ideas, then it's difficult to stay in creative flow. The experience should feel snappy and efficient.

Social - Many users wanted to be able to share their designs with others for feedback. The experience should make it easy include friends and family!

THE sOLUTION

Through vivid, high fidelity 3D models, Lowe's Vision empowers customers to view and experience products in their homes digitally and enables new visual interactions. A customer can simply drag-and-drop place their choice in their home so they can step back and see how well their choice fits. With another touch, the product is in their cart. When they're ready to order they can easily move products into a cart and either have them delivered or reserved for pickup at their local Lowe's.

When they get to store, an augmented reality overlay guides them through the store to pickup their furniture. After unpacking furniture, the augmented reality design can be used as a reference design to ensure that the placement of pieces is picture perfect!

The Future of Retail

After the app was launched, Fast Company awarded Lowe's "Most Innovative Company" for making it easy for customers to "imagining what new furniture and other products could look like in their home or office". We believe that retail experiences will continue to be more immersive and experiential blending the digital and physical worlds. It's not just about augmented reality, it's about building experiences that feel more seamless and intuitive. We hope that this solution accelerates Lowe's vision to make it easy for people to love where they live!
