What if there was an exploration platform which was accessible to scientists, enthusiasts, and students that was so easy to use that it made it possible for anyone to contribute to a vast community seeking out the secrets of the deep?
An estimated 1,268,250,000 volumetric kilometers of ocean have yet to be explored — harboring unknown secrets of science and the potential for practical knowledge that could move mankind forward. Currently, underwater exploration is prohibitively expensive, complicated,restricted, and those who would gladly contribute time and effort are left in high-tide.
Our process to explore this challenge began with customer validation surveys, which informed our definition of user personas (Observers, Explorers and Sponsors) involved or hopeful to be involved in exploration efforts. We were then able to identify existing exploration user journeys and prioritize expectations of each persona from an online exploration experience. Having collected this information, we identified points of friction and opportunities that helped define success.

Accessible - Before all else, the platform needed to be available to those who wanted to explore - whether that was through education programs, meetup groups, or marine research labs - the ROV and sharing platform needed to be low cost and easy to share access to.
Exciting - What if you could swim through the ocean like a manta ray and join in on the infinite adventures happening in the ocean right at this moment? Growing the explorer base and inspiring those already driven to dive means making a platform that tethers you to a network of real-time ROVs that gives you the thrill of being transported into the deep!
Community driven - Exploring is a group activity, whether you’re sharing the video of your grand adventure or discussing the biological mechanisms of an octopus in an educational setting. The platform we build needs to be a forum for shared experiences that drive adventure.
With these success criteria in mind, we began to ideate and craft initial wireframes of the website.
First, we studied the existing user journey for OpenROV's previous platform - mapping out pain points and opportunities for a much improved user flow. Working with engineers we got our hands on the Trident prototype and step-by-step, from unboxing to deep sea skimming, we ideated on the most intuitive and joyful journey from armchair enthusiast to contributor to the deep-sea exploration community capturing video of new finds and sharing them in real-time across the world.
Initial storyboards iterated into high fidelity mock-ups as we mapped the ROV controls to the Trident Pilot app's UX to make a final experience as easy and fun to use as a triple-A video game.
